O1-Model of Language Learning for Erasmus Students using game-based methodology and Mobile Learning

The O1 will give methodological landmarks to rely on in order to enhance motivation and involve the students in language learning and knowledge about the hosting city and region. The model will define how to integrate a game-based approach in University Language Courses with the application of Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) exploiting a Mobile Learning paradigm (the EULALIA APP).

Furthermore, useful guidelines for an innovative and inclusive methodology to foster motivation, and define a participatory design for the Students will be delivered.
The Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) tools are important to deliver a solution that could personalize learning, and user experience. In this way, when the student performs the autonomous study with the EULALIA APP, the system intervenes in order to intercept the difficulties by offering feedback and new solutions. The idea behind the systems is “to bring the students to a learning at their own speed”.

EULALIA methodology will be addressed to mobile approach in order to:

  • support the student when they practice at home the notions obtained from the formal course;
  • strengthen language abilities beyond homework.

In this way, the student could train the competences in every context when they bring a device (smartphone, tablet, PC) and the internet.

EULALIA methodology will be based on a learner-centred approach, that supports the idea of an active learner who becomes a developer of the OERs, namely language game/exercises.

The report will be organized according to the following dimensions:

  • Regional approach;
  • Inclusive aspects exploiting the TUIs;
  • Review of game-based methodology and Mobile Learning in language education;
  • Review of Tangible User Interfaces (TUIs) in language learning;
  • Results from the focus groups with students and professors;
  • Integration of game-based methodologies and TUIs paradigms for language exercises in Language Courses;
  • Co-Creation guidelines for the design of the EULALIA APP;
  • An assessment tool proposing a set of descriptors which allow the evaluation of the different competences for each language proficiency level;
  • Potential reapplication of the model in other contexts.

The framework will be documented in a professionally designed handbook available in four languages: English, Italian, Polish and Spanish. With an objective of exploitation, it will be published under a Creative Commons CC-BY-SA license to encourage its free use, modification, and re-publishing by educational stakeholders both during and after the project lifespan and beyond.

Furthermore, in order to reach out to the research and policy communities, the methodological model will be the object of a scientific publication.
